Class Descriptions
We have a full schedule of both in-person and online classes via Zoom (listed as "at Home" on the schedule).
Preregistration required for all classes.
The Yoga Tree of Seattle offers expert instruction with teachers who are dedicated to ongoing study and bring a wealth of knowledge and practiced skill in the full experience of yoga. Each class melds classical tradition, modern insight and compassionate guidance. Our teachers create a safe space for exploration and adapt the practices to suit any individual at any skill level in a small class size atmosphere. Most importantly, our instructors understand how to work with the subtler aspects of the body, mind, and energy. They can teach you how to find the balance between effort and ease, not only in physical postures, but also as you navigate your daily life.
Our classes are small in size and are presented with awareness of and respect for the ancient practice of yoga as well as the many different reasons people come to yoga and the different challenges they may bring with them. We have a wide variety of classes encompassing the many practices of yoga including asana (physical postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation, chanting, and more all of which lead to compassionate self-awareness and a sense of coming home to your Self.
However far and in whatever direction you wish to explore within the practices of yoga, you will find support, encouragement and expert guidance here.

Hatha Yoga - Our Hatha Yoga classes are based on the classic and ancient practices of yoga, using asana (postures) in combination with the breath to develop strength, stability, and flexibility. There are many styles of Hatha Yoga. Some use a specific series of postures, others use a flow of movements, while some may use props such as blocks or belts to assist a posture or maximize a stretch. All styles of Hatha Yoga, however, encourage proper alignment of the body and explore the balance between effort and ease. All levels are welcome.
Vinyasa Flow - Vinyasa is a fun and creative practice which emphasizes a continuous flow of mindful movement including sun salutations and dynamic breathing. This practice builds strength, stamina, and flexibility. While our classes are inclusive of all levels, Vinyasa Flow often moves at a faster pace than other types of yoga. Therefore, it may be helpful to have some experience in group classes before attending.
Early Morning Yoga - Designed specifically for those wishing to begin their day with a mindful practice dedicated to building strength, stability, and flexibility with attention to the breath to help meet whatever the day may bring. You can expect a class that is both energizing and recharging to support starting the day from a balanced state of being. All levels are welcome.
Gentle Yoga - Gentle Yoga is a slower paced Hatha class which may include a slow flow of postures, restorative yoga, and gentle pranayama (breathing exercises). This class is perfect for those looking for a more relaxed pace, or recovering from injury or who may be pregnant, or those wanting to unwind after a long day. All are welcome.
Iyengar Yoga - This all-levels Hatha class is based on the teachings of the late B.K.S Iyengar, and includes an integrated approach to postures, pranayama, and philosophy. Students will learn the fundamentals of each posture and hold them for longer durations to help them experience and develop a refined understanding of alignment and action. The classes will follow intelligent sequencing where each posture will help prepare the body and mind for subsequent postures. Students will also learn the use of props, allowing them to go deeper in their postures in ways that may not otherwise be possible.
Chair/Accessible Yoga - This class is designed around the creative use of a chair as a supportive prop. This class is perfect for anyone who would like a little extra support in balancing postures and/or getting up and down off the floor. Perfect for students of all ages who may be recovering from injury, who are pregnant or coming back to their practice, who may have some mobility challenges, or who are stuck at their desks all day. All bodies welcome!
Note: this class will include standing and balancing postures with the assist of a chair, and may include some time on the mat.
Restorative Yoga - Restorative Yoga uses long-held, supported resting postures to create the conditions for us to cultivate the skill of conscious relaxation, and most importantly, to release unnecessary habitual tension in the body and mind. This class is designed to reset and nourish the nervous system. All are welcome!
Yin Yoga - Yin Yoga is designed to passively lengthen muscles in a series of mainly floor postures that will be held for 1-5 minutes. During the “hold” you will be guided into softening gently into the shape using your breath and mindful observation of thoughts. There will be carefully-guided gentle movements in the transition between each shape. All welcome!
iRest® Yoga Nidra Meditation- A yoga nidra class using the method developed by Dr. Richard Miller. This class is quiet and introspective, with plenty of time to breathe, feel, and welcome the pause between stimulus and response. Class may also include some gentle movement, pranayama (breathing practices) and use of mudra (hand gestures) to help develop our connection to our inner knowing that is always present. Beginners welcome.
Morning Meditation (mini-iRest® Yoga Nidra) - A 30 minute guided meditation based on the teachings of iRest Yoga Nidra Meditation. Session will include attention to sensations of the body and the breath. No previous meditation experience needed. (Currently offered online via Zoom only.)
Prenatal Yoga - A class designed to support expecting students through all stages of pregnancy. Props are used for support, and all postures and cues are targeted for a pregnant person's needs and specific considerations. There is a strong element of community building and birth education included, both before and during the movement portion of class. You'll build endurance, learn techniques for coping with labor, and end with deep relaxation. This class is for all levels and all trimesters. PLEASE NOTE: This class is currently being offered on a limited basis. Please check the class schedule for dates!
Yogic Breathing: Pranayama - Pranayama, the yoga breathing practices, are both a preparation for meditation and a meditation on the breath itself. The practices can be both deeply relaxing and also energizing. This class teaches pranayama techniques in ways that are accessible to beginners and useful to more advanced practitioners. All are welcome.
